Instagram Returns Chronological Feed — But Is It Helpful? Explaining What It Means for You

Instagram is bringing back the chronological feed, allowing users, brands, and creators choose between the two options – Favorites and Following which are basically recommendations to your feed based on your interests and followed accounts.

According to their press release, the company states the difference between the two as follows:

  • Favorites show you the latest from accounts that you choose, like your best friends and favorite creators. In addition to this view, posts from accounts in Favorites will also show up higher in your home feed. You can add up to 50 accounts to your list. Posts from accounts on your favorites list will also show up higher in your home feed, as shown by a star icon.
  • Following shows you posts from the people you follow. Both Favorites and Following will show you posts in chronological order, so you can quickly catch up on recent posts.
To use Favorites and Following, tap on Instagram in the top left corner of your home page to choose what you see.

It's important to note that the default choice for users will remain the algorithmic feed, meaning that ultimately users will probably see more brand content, not less.

What Does Instagram Chronological Feed Mean for Your Business?

Generally, the novelty means that Instagram is pushing for more ads, since the increased competition for users' attention that comes from added content can lessen the impact of ads.

The new layout also allows users to sort their feed by Recommendations. If you focus on making high-quality content, then there’s a good chance of getting on recommendations and thereby reaching more people.

For you, this new approach means that you should now invest into a good-quality, optimised and appealing content even more than before and create top-notch advertisements that will draw your audience's attention.

Posting at the right time is also important to make sure you deliver your message at the exact hour when your audience is active. Therefore, content scheduling solutions can be useful if your audience is diverse.
